About A Spoonful Of Sugar

ang_blog_pic.jpg

I first came across the wonderful world of food blogging in November 2003 when I stumbled across Deb's wonderful blog. For the first time I realised that I could use the internet to enthuse about food with others - there's only so much my friends and family can hear about food and baking techniques without groaning loudly! The food blogging community is still very fast-growing and vibrant; I'm really proud to be involved with it.

I decided to christen my blog A Spoonful Of Sugar because whilst I can cook savoury food well, I much prefer getting creative with desserts, breads, cakes and drinks. My first memory of cooking is baking rock cakes with my Granny. Having started with sweet things, I wouldn't be surprised if I'm still baking in my golden years. The occasional savoury post will appear when I cook something which is either particularly interesting, creative or pretty.

Whilst I adore cakes and desserts I do worry about my weight. So, I make an attempt to reduce sugar a little and I often cut down the number of eggs used in a recipe. Wherever possible I like to attempt to make a recipe low-fat. It's a nice challenge and quite often I find that I can make low-fat versions which taste as good as (or even better) than the original recipe. This assuages my conscience and thus lets me eat more of the good things in life!

About Me

And now, a few facts about me. My name is Angela. I'm 30, Scottish, and I live in Avon (United Kingdom) with my husband Dave and son Lucas. I'm currently a stay-at-home mummy after spending several years working in Telecommunications. I can honestly say I don't miss work in the slightest! Well, I miss a large paycheck, but I definitely don't miss the stress. I've never had any formal training in the kitchen, but I do harbour desires to do a patisserie course....

Other than cooking and baking, I do a lot of reading (both cookbooks and fiction); attempt to teach myself Italian (I am determined to one day hire a cottage in deepest Tuscany and survive by speaking half-decent Italian); watch lots of movies (both Dave and I are huge film buffs and we have a rather large DVD collection); and relax by doing some cross-stitching.

Random Facts

I love chocolate and almost anything made from it! I draw the line at chocolate covered scorpions though.

I always read the dessert menu first before ordering in a restaurant.

Similarly, I always plan dessert first when guests are coming over; everything has to go with the dessert!

If I can't have chocolate, ice-cream is the next best thing. Green & Black's Organic Dark Chocolate ice-cream is the best ice-cream ever.

I make bread if I am in a bad mood. Thumping dough around is very therapeutic! Also, slapping a ball of dough against the counter is actually a really good (if a little lazy) way of kneading it. This is especially good with a smallish ball of pizza dough.

I actually prefer vegetables to fruit. Although, bananas are a firm favourite. I don't have a problem with fruit juices and smoothies though. I think its the pips/seeds that bother me.

I own over 150 cookbooks.
