I’d like to introduce our newest family member – a beautifully, shiny (lustrous, even) KitchenAid mixer! This is Dave’s totally fabulous birthday present to me and I’m still in shock. Its red, its gorgeous, its surprisingly compact, and its going to get so much use! So shiny… I can definitely see why Nigella Lawson is so enamoured with hers.
After pulling out almost every cookbook I possessed, I eventually decided to make “Rich Man’s Brioche” from “The Breadmakers Apprentice” by Peter Rheinart. I’ve always wanted to make Brioche, but most recipes required you to use a mixer, and now I have one! Making the dough was so easy, and so quick! I’ll post more about that tomorrow once I bake it – currently its sitting in the fridge chilling thoroughly. Mercifully, it hasn’t expanded hugely like Deb’s did but I may put a plate underneath the dish, just in case…
Next up will be a pavlova, I think. Just the thought of effortless meringue is exciting! And on Monday (my actual birthday), I’ll make my birthday cake in it (butterscotch cake this year). Such a fantastic present – thank-you (once again) Dave!!!!

Cool! I have exactly the same model and colour! Have fun!
..oh and just one little tip, which you probably don’t need but which I sure would have: if you plan on kneading a dry-ish, “tough” dough, check how hot the mixer gets. I almost burned the motor of mine once.

Great minds think alike: I have one that colour too! We bought it a few months ago and it has rarely left the counter since. The first time I kneaded bread in it I almost fainted with pleasure (well I would have were I a Victorian lady – but you get the point). Have fun with it!

Wow, I didn’t realise red was such a popular colour!
Alberto – thanks for the tip! I’ve been following the instruction manual very closely so hopefully nothing nasty will happen!! I’m still loving my shiny red machine…
Meg – great minds do indeed think alike! I’m looking forward to making a standard bread dough in it. I’ve always wanted to know if I’m kneading dough throughly enough by hand (never been able to do the windowpane test that so many people advocate), so I’ll have a go at a farmhouse loaf later this week.
