Happy St. George’s Day!

StGeorge's Day Cupcakes

Happy St. George’s Day, everyone!!

St. George is the patron saint of England—of George and the dragon fame—and his cross forms the flag of England.  It’s only in recent years—as far as I, as a Scot, can tell—that people have wanted to celebrate St. George’s day, so there isn’t really a traditional celebratory meal.  So, to help celebrate… here are some double-vanilla St George’s day cupcakes!

  1. wonderful
cupcakes to make Saint G proud

there must be a few contenders for the quintessentially English meal…

    fish and chips?
    roast beef and yorkshires?
scones, cream, jam & lots of cups of tea?

perhaps our lack of clearly identified national dish is the result of too much choice?
and now there’s St G’s cupcakes to add to the banquet

It’s a little sad that I’m so excited, but it is wonderful to meet you Rob! I have been bemoaning the lack of Bristol foodies (for want of a better word) online for ages, and then you pop up :)

Beef and Yorkies seems to be the popular choice for St George’s Day, but I’m wondering if chicken tikka masala might trump even that? We do have very eclectic tastes these days. IIRC, chez Ang dined on Chinese takeaway for St George’s day!

I’m looking forward to making some St Andrew’s cupcakes in November :D

  2. Love to learn about celebrations outside of the US. Cute cupcakes!

Thanks, Lori! It’s just a shame that St George’s Day isn’t a national holiday in England. Maybe that would encourage more people to celebrate it :)

Us Brits can be oddly patriotic sometimes. Cute cakes, I wish I could ice as well as you.

Thanks, Karen! This was pretty easy, if a little time-consuming to do 48. You just need to make a dome of buttercream, cover it with fondant and then some strips of red fondant to make the cross.

        Hi!
My husband is from the former Yugoslavia and they celebrate their Patron Saint’s Day. His family’s is St. George. The celebration is called a Slava. I would LOVE to see a little photo essay for how you frosted these cupcakes. You make it sound easy, but I have never worked with fondant, and would love to see a step by step demo the next time you do it! He would go nuts over these. They are gorgeous!
        Thanks!
        Valerie

  4. Happy St George Day Ang (I had no idea it was :P ). Those cupcakes look like a fitting tribute! :)

I had to be told when it was, but in my defence, I’m Scottish and he’s the patron saint of England :)

      Thanks, Lorraine!
